“It seems to me that if you or I must choose
between two courses of thought or action,
we should remember our dying
and try so to live that our death brings no pleasure on the world”
We’ve all been confronted with difficult choices. Often these choices only shape a small moment in our lives, but sometimes the reach of a decision can be so vast that it can impact not only your future, but generations after you. We all have an impact on the world, which is why it is important that we understand the effects of our decisions. Even just the decision to get out of bed and live is a hugely influential decision. Our lives, our breath, our choices or even lack of involvement in the world are all part of an intricate web. Steinbeck’s words often reverberate in my head when I find myself in a bit of a low with my depression. No matter how difficult or good my life is, I will always have choices, we all do. One day our time on this earth will end, but instead of biding our time until our breath runs out, instead make decisions that will leave a positive mark on the world so that when the time comes your “death brings no pleasure on the world” but instead a joy that you lived.
