How a Hello Fresh Box Works + $30 off Coupon Code (MEAGFLORA30)
I had seen all of the hype about freshbox kits and healthy meal deliveries, so after months of looking at different companies and reading reviews, I decided to try it out. Here is how Hello Fresh works, the pricing breakdown and who I think this service is ideal for. I also put pictures of each meal in a slideshow below.
How does it work?
You schedule a day of the week for delivery and Hello Fresh delivers food for three recipes.
It is delivered in a box with a huge ice pack that is designed to help keep ingredients fresh and cool as long as possible (I would still make sure and take it inside and refrigerate as soon as possible, especially in warm months).
It comes with all of the ingredients for each recipe, minus basics (ie. salt, pepper, olive/vegetable oil); however it does include specialty oils like sesame seed oil if the meals call for those type of ingredients and other spices.
It also includes recipe cards and step by step instructions to cook your meal. The recipes are truly easy to follow, yet the dishes taste like they are more complex. They also have great variety, and you can specify food preferences like allergies/gluten intolerance, vegan/vegetarian as well. I consider myself a pretty good cook, but even my most cooking challenged friends could follow these instructions.
I cooked one recipe a day (each recipe is separated into boxes and feeds 2-4 people depending on what you choose). I even skipped one day since we were out for the evening and we wouldn’t be back in time for dinner, the ingredients even held up for the fourth day.
Hello Fresh Prices
Let’s do a quick breakdown of the cost of each box. I chose the Classic Plan, which is about $9.99/meal per person. Basically that’s $20 a dinner for two people. At first I felt like that was high, but honestly, how often do you spend less than $60 at the grocery store when you go to buy meals for the next three days?
Sometimes I spend right about that amount, but usually more. I always pick up extra things I don’t need, I also end up buying meat that weighs more because that is how it is packaged, or it is a better deal to buy the value pack. Often my family doesn’t like to eat leftovers, so I feel like a lot of our food goes to waste when we buy in bulk, which makes our meals cost more in the long run. I didn’t have spoilage with Hello Fresh, which is something that I love about it. I would say depending on the meal I’m making and how/where I shop, the prices mostly measure up to what I would normally pay (sometimes more/sometimes less). Overall, I feel like their prices are fair for the quality of the ingredients, easy of meal planning and the convenience of avoiding the grocery store.
Who is Hello Fresh Ideal For?
Okay, I think everyone could benefit from Hello Fresh box deliveries (honest to goodness); but let’s get specific on how it is ideal.
A Working/Busy Family. If you are constantly working/busy and you can’t make it to the grocery store to pick up fresh meat and produce more than once a week, I think this is ideal for you. When I don’t meal plan/grocery shop I end up spending a ton of money eating out, AND it’s usually not healthy. Hello Fresh helps me make fresh meals at least three times a week; regardless of how busy I am.
Those Who Don’t Like Leftovers. The meal kits come with plenty for the meal, but there is not a lot over for leftovers. We don’t eat a ton of leftovers, because most meals aren’t as good the next day; so this helps keep us on budget with less food spoilage.
It’s Great for Small Families (couples, singles and families with small kids that aren’t eating big meals). Most of the time you only save money at the grocery store buying in bulk; so the cost evens out quickly if you run into food spoilage like we do with a small family.
Those Who Are Good at Cooking/Want to Learn How. First of all, Hello Fresh is FUN! Secondly, it tastes amazing. I added all of the recipes to my arsenal! They are seriously that good. It also had me try things that I wouldn’t have normally thought of and introduced me to trying to cook with some ingredients I don’t normally have on hand. Whether you are an average cook just trying to add a little more variety to their menu and need some ideas, or an experienced cook; Hello Fresh recipes and meals are a great option.
The Health Conscious. When you cook your own meals, you can control the salt content and use only healthy, fresh ingredients vs overly processed foods. The majority of my baby weight loss (40 lbs so far), I’ve credited to eating at home instead of eating out.
I hope this gives you a good idea on what to expect when you get a Hello Fresh Box! I honestly love this company and was extremely happy with the food portions, quality and recipes. I had zero complaints (which is saying something)! If you want to try it out, I have a limited time coupon code for you to get $30 off your first box: MEAGFLORA30 (new customers only). You can also click here and it will take you directly to their site where the coupon will be automatically applied. Let me know your experiences with meal kit companies and what you thought of Hello Fresh once you’ve tried it!
