SHOPPING SMALL SPOTLIGHT: WIGHT GOLD CLOTHING

One thing I love about being a blogger is finding small boutiques with good products and introducing them to my readers.  Years ago, I had a short-lived, online boutique until I realized my real passion was for blogging and marketing.  However, my short time working in that business made me realize how hard it is to get your name and your unique perspective out there.  Now that I am a blogger, I really enjoy finding these little gems and sharing them, so that hopefully more people can discover them and enjoy their products as much as I do.

The company I want to share with you this month for my shopping small spotlight is Wight Gold.  This online clothing store is owned by Camille Wight, who is a total girl boss!  She is motivated, creative and positive.  Here is a quote from the store’s bio that I want to include so you can see what I mean about her, “June of 2016 we went through the trial and heartbreak of a miscarriage. After returning to work that next week, I decided that it was time to go after my dreams and do something that would truly make me happy. I want our sweet baby to look down from heaven and see that we are living our lives to our full potential.”  That gave me chills when I read that!  On top of the fact that she is fearlessly chasing her dreams, her website is filled with beautifully styled photos, great products and everything is extremely well priced!  The top I am wearing in these photos is only $23.00 and there is a pair of sandals I’ve had on repeat in my Instagram outfits from there that are only $47.00 (I’ve seen sandals that are almost identical sell for $90+)!  So if you haven’t checked them out from my Instagram posts yet, make sure and take a look!

How to Get Rid of White Marks http://www.heartsofgoldblog.com/2017/08/how-to-get-rid-of-white-marks/ http://www.heartsofgoldblog.com/2017/08/how-to-get-rid-of-white-marks/#respond Thu, 03 Aug 2017 05:57:50 +0000 http://www.heartsofgoldblog.com/?p=2638 Thank you Dove for sponsoring this post. Dove Invisible Dry Spray Antiperspirant goes on invisible, leaving no white marks on 100 colors of clothing.

HOW TO EASILY GET RID OF WHITE MARKS FROM DEODORANT AND ANTIPERSPIRANT

I am constantly changing in and out of tops and dresses when I am trying to put together the perfect outfit for a blog post or date night with my husband.  I usually wiggle in and out of my clothes in weird ways to avoid getting white marks on my clothes, and I rarely succeed unscathed!  When I finally find something I want to wear, that is the clothing item I typically get deodorant on.  Usually I end up changing my outfit completely or I frantically try to scrub out the marks and dry my clothes again before heading out the door.  So how did I get rid of all of these white marks?  It’s really simple…I bought a different antiperspirant!

I was really excited when I found Dove Invisible Dry Spray Antiperspirant this summer.  It goes on invisible, I stay fresh all day, and it doesn’t leave any white marks on 100 colors!  I wanted to share this with you, because I know so many other women have gone through the same clothing wiggle dance as I have.  Actually, approximately half of women have reported waiting for their deodorant to dry before dressing or contorting their bodies to try to avoid white marks.  Dove Invisible Dry Spray Antiperspirant has been a huge time and embarrassment saver for me, and I love the fresh floral scent.  I highly recommend giving this a try and saving your OOTD (outfit of the day) from those tough to get rid of, dreaded white marks.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

 Simple All White Outfit

In the spring and summer I like to wear as much white as I can before the weather turns and/or Labor Day (depending if you follow the old “no white after Labor Day” rule.  Instead of just throwing on a white dress, I decided to put together a simple all white outfit comprised of a pleated white skirt with lace panel detailing and a white ruffle sleeve top.  I love buying separates sometimes, because you can make so many more outfits with each piece vs a dress.  Here are a couple of tips that I found helpful when pairing two white separates.

Using Separates to Create a Simple All White Outfit

  • If you want the outfit to look like one piece, then you have to make sure the whites are the same color or really similar.  Otherwise, feel free to mix and match!  Many different variations of white (cream, ivory, stark white) can blend well with each other.
  • Make sure one half of your outfit is more fitted than the other.  If you have a billowy skirt, pair it with a top that is at least slightly more fitted than the bottom.  If you have a loose or top with a lot of ruffles, pair it with a more fitted pencil skirt.  Otherwise you may end up looking like a marshmallow.
  • I love pairing my white outfits with light neutral tones like grey and beige.
  • Accessorize!  Accessories break up the white outfit to add more dimension and depth.  I have used belts before in my solid color outfits as well.

Shopping Tips: If you are looking for a good place to shop for dressy whites, I love getting skirts and dresses at ASOS.  The lace panel midi skirt I’m wearing is only $35 from there.  I tend to shop for white tops at almost all of my favorites stores, because they are a staple in my wardrobe and I like different details on each one.  I originally bought this one from Target, but since they no longer carry anything similar, I found an almost identical one at H&M recently.

Petite Tip: Make sure you don’t wear a midi skirt that is intended for someone taller or the length will hit you in the wrong place and make your legs appear even shorter.  This skirt is actually a regular midi skirt, but because of the lace at the bottom, I actually cut a couple of inches off with scissors since it wasn’t a finished hem to begin with.  If you can’t find a midi skirt in a petite size and you don’t want to get it hemmed, opt for a knee length or maxi skirt.

Have a good weekend and happy Saturday!

summer hair, hair repair, gliss hair repair, gliss ultimate hair repair reviews, repair damaged hair, repair summer hair, pretty summer hair

The summer can be absolutely brutal on my hair.  Between lightening my color, upping my workout routine and hitting up pools, lakes and beaches; my hair can be a total frizzy mess during the warmer months!  Luckily, I’ve figured out a routine over the years that keeps my hair healthy and luminous.

Don’t Let the Sun Steal Your Shine: How to Get Healthy Summer Hair

#1 Get rid of build up.

  • Build up weighs down your hair so it looks greasy more quickly.  You want to wash your hair less to help keep it healthy, so it’s important to make sure to keep your hair free of build up.
  • (Every other wash.) I use 1 TBSP of apple cider vinegar on my roots and the top of my head after getting hair wet (before shampooing).  This gets rid of all of the dry shampoo and product build up I’ve accumulated on my hair, especially on the crown of my head.

#2 Find shampoo and conditioners that are designed to prevent and repair damaged hair.

  • My current favorites are the Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Conditioner.  Gliss™ products are scientifically proven to repair hair that was damaged from a variety of harsh conditions; and the Ultimate Repair line is perfect for summer damage, because it has more liquid keratin to repair hair.
  • You can actually SAVE $5.00 off TWO Schwarzkopf® GLISS™ Shampoo or Conditioner or Treatment right now with this coupon (click here for coupon link).  You can use this coupon on the other Gliss™ Hair Repair lines as well (5 sub-lines).

You can find these products at Walmart in the beauty and hair section.

#3 To really repair damage, use a hair mask and/or leave in treatment as well.

  • I currently am using the Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Express Repair™ Conditioner; which is a leave in conditioner that I spray on after towel drying my hair.  I like the leave in conditioner in the summer, because it makes my hair instantly brushable.  I also feel like it really helps me tame my frizz!
  • This is also a great product for lake trips where you don’t have access to a shower, because you can spray it on your damp hair to keep it from getting really dried out and frizzy.

#4 Try not to wash your hair more than 1-2x a week.

  • I think we have all heard that it is better not to wash your hair too much.  However, it’s hard to do this in the summer.  Getting rid of build up (step #1), is definitely a factor.  Also, after a couple of days, start using dry shampoo on your roots.  I also find it helpful to wear a shower cap on the days I’m not washing my hair, because it blocks it from getting wet.  I find that when my hair accidentally gets wet, it looks greasy faster.  Also, unless you are truly going for a swim or doing a summer activity where your hair must get wet, put it up!  When I take my son to the pool, I just throw my hair in a messy bun on the top of my head.

#5 Take a break from heat styling.

  • Typically I heat style my hair only once or twice a week, which is largely due to the fact that I only wash my hair once or twice a week!  Heat can really cause damage, so when I heat style my hair, I tend to do loose curls that look good as they slowly straighten throughout the next few days.  My shower cap suggestion above also helps your styling last as long as possible, because it keeps the steam and water off of your styled locks.
  • If you are someone who is an avid swimmer or really into water sports, then I recommend only heat styling your hair a couple of times a week and then finding a go-to braid for the other days.

These things have definitely been a game changer for my hair!  So if you were searching for a way to get shining, healthy hair again…here is the way!  Use the coupon code I linked above (and here) and pick up the Schwarzkopf Ultimate Repair line at Walmart today.

HOW TO GET PERFECT BALAYAGE HAIR

So you want balayage hair?  I did too, well…technically I’ve had it for awhile, but I wanted a lightened, blonder version.  Plus, mine hadn’t been done in forever and was in desperate need of an update!  I collaborated with a local hairdresser, Sydney Raab who is a wizard with blonde and balayage.  She gave me a fresh, new color and I was so impressed by her meticulous care with blending and detail that I decided to interview her in a post about achieving the perfect blonde balayage highlights.

(P.S. She is giving away a FREE HAIR COLOR below for one lucky Utah local).

TIPS FOR GETTING THE PERFECT BLONDE TONE & BALAYAGE HAIR COLOR

Q1: What do you wish clients knew/understood about going lighter?

The number one thing I wish clients understood about going lighter is that if you have dark brown hair and you want icy platinum blonde hair, it is not, I repeat, NOT going to happen in one day.  (Unless you want your hair to be extremely damaged, dry, breaking, or literally melting off of your head…yes that does happen!)  If you want your hair to stay healthy and long, you need to take it in baby steps; which is usually only 1-3 levels at a time. Do not expect your stylist to be able to take ANY of your dark brown hair to platinum blonde in one session. We are beauticians, not magicians. Our brushes are not wands.

Also, going lighter is NOT cheap. Don’t expect it to be cheap and don’t ask it to be cheap. Product, supplies, equipment, booth rent and education are all expensive. When a stylist is great at what they do, they are going to charge what they are worth. Great hair is a luxury, not a necessity. You get what you pay for. Great hair isn’t always cheap and cheap hair isn’t always great.

Lightening your hair is often a lifestyle change. Expect your hairdresser to give you many recommendations of how to maintain your color and new habits to start.

Q2: There are obviously different blonde tones/shades. Can you give a short description of each and are there certain shades that go better with specific skin tones?

There are many shades of blonde that go by different names that describe their color well. These are the most common.

-From lightest to darkest-

  • Icy Blonde: lightest, icy, white (think Elsa from Frozen).
  • Pearl Blonde: a light blonde, an off white pearly color.
  • Beige Blonde: a little darker than pearl with slight warmth, but still very ashy.
  • Sandy Blonde: medium blonde, very ashy (looks like sand).
  • Honey Blonde: also a medium blonde, but is more warm (like honey).
  • Golden Blonde: one of the darkest blondes, very warm (brings out the yellow and orange tones).

Cool tones go well with those who have a blue skin undertone. Warm tones go well with those who have a green skin undertone.

  • You can tell what your undertone is by looking at your veins on the inside of your wrist. If they are more blue, you are blue; if they are more greenish-yellow, you are green.

Q3: What is helpful for hairdressers when clients are trying to communicate the color they are going for?  Also, what information should you pass along to your hairdresser if it is your first time going to them?

Pictures from Pinterest or other social media sites help a ton when trying to explain the color, style, cut, etc. that you are hoping to achieve.

You need to tell them your hair coloring history for at least the last year, but preferably as long as you can remember (whatever color is still on your hair/everything underneath top color).  They need to know if it was a professional color or box dye, and how long ago it was done.  Hairdressers also like to know what you have liked, what you haven’t liked, and anything else about your hair you believe could be of use. Be as honest as possible.

Q4: What are important factors in determining whether or not a person’s hair will lighten easily?

Important factors include:

  • Hair texture: which is the size of the individual strands of hair (fine, medium, or course).
  • Hair type: which is the shape or natural form your hair makes (straight, wavy, curly, or extra curly).
  • Ethnicity: different ethnic backgrounds can determine how hair will lighten.
  • Hair coloring history: is a factor into how it will lighten.

Q5: What is the best way to make a lighter hair color look more natural vs extremely harsh?

The best way to make a light color look more natural is to ask your stylist for a smudged root (very trendy right now).  This allows 1-3 inches, depending on your preference, of a natural grown out look to break up the intensity of the blonde.  You could also add in a few natural lowlights for dimension and contrast to break up the blonde.

Having a smudged root or balayage is much less maintenance than an all over color because you don’t have to come back to get your roots touched up when they grow out and can go much longer between appointments.

Q6: What are your best tips for in between visits and balayage/blonde upkeep?

Taking care of your hair is key.  Doing deep conditions weekly will help add moisture back into your hair that was stripped during the lightening process.  Use professional color protect shampoo and conditioner, along with a blue or purple shampoo to keep out unwanted tones. Always use a heat protect product when using heat on your hair.  Come in for a trim every six weeks.  You could also revisit your hairdresser every 4-6 weeks for a quick tone touch up.

My 2 Personal Tips for Getting the Balayage You Want as a Client

I’ve had a few different hairdressers (over my years of moving around) do their versions of balayage/melts/ombre on me.  Here is what I have learned to specify.

  • How blended I want the color to be.  #1 From the top of my head to the bottom; where I want the light to start blending into the dark and how much of a difference between the top roots to the bottom.  #2 How the individual strands blend together.  I didn’t want there to be a stark contrast between strands at the bottom of my hair where the light would be this time (ie. dark brown strands mixed with blonde strands).  I asked Sydney to blend the bottom well so that the alternating strands were beige mixed with lighter blonde, and she did this perfectly.  If you want more of a dark to light contrast, make sure and specify that too!
  • How warm I want the color/tones.  My hair tends to pull a lot of red from the get go.  I actually used to grow some random carrot top, red hairs as a child.  I typically stress that I like to go more on the ashy side, because I think it goes better with my undertones.  Ashy isn’t always the best though.  Pick what goes best with your skin color and undertones.  Caramel and honey hair are gorgeous warm colors that look beautiful in a balayage too!
*Please note: There are a few grammatical changes, condensing and question combining from the original interview text.  All of Sydney’s opinions, advice and thoughts are hers alone.  Neither Sydney, or I/this blog, are responsible for results or any outcome that may result from your experience with a hairdresser.

I hope these tips are helpful for you if you are considering getting a balayage with blonde tones/highlights.  Don’t forget to check out this awesome giveaway below!  Sydney is actually giving away a FREE HAIR COLOR to one lucky Utah local.  There are also a bunch of other Utah based companies and bloggers involved in the giveaway, so make sure to check it out!

Making a Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

When I first saw smoothie bowls taking over Instagram, I decided to give them a whirl (pun intended) ;).  It honestly took me quite a few tries to get the consistency and sweetness correct.  I experimented with everything from a bullet blender to a food processor and my favorite recipe so far is a strawberry smoothie bowl.

My personal favorite method is using the food processor, I feel like it blends the ingredients to a smooth consistency without making it too runny.  You can experiment with fruit ratios, protein powders and almond milk vs coconut milk as well.  I feel like the taste of the protein powder can make a huge difference in how much I like the flavor, so make sure you like the flavor of the one you choose.  I used Muscle Milk Vanilla Protein Powder.  It has a great flavor and the price is good.  If you are looking for a vegan protein powder, the next one on my bucket list is actually one my sister-in-law recommended to me, Vegan Smart All-In-One Vanilla Nutritional Shake Powder.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Frozen Strawberries
  • 1 Banana
  • 3 Tbsp Unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1 Scoop Vanilla Protein Powder (variations on amounts in notes below)
  • Agave Syrup (optional)
  • Shredded Coconut
  • Chia Seeds

Instructions

  1. Combine strawberries, 1/2 banana, almond milk and protein powder in a food processor.
  2. Puree until smooth, but still thick.
  3. Taste and add a drizzle of agave for added sweetness if needed; blend.
  4. Pour contents into bowl.
  5. Topping Ideas: Get creative, top with whatever you like! My favorites are shredded coconut, banana slices, chia seeds, sliced strawberry.
Recipe Type: Breakfast, Snack, Fruit

Notes

*Protein Powder Variation Suggestion: If eating as a snack vs meal, I only use 1/2 a scoop of protein. You can add more protein if you are looking for a more protein heavy, higher calorie bowl. I would not recommend adding extra almond milk to compensate until after blending and deciding if it needs a little thinning. Adding too much liquid creates a soupy bowl. **Coconut milk can be used in place of almond milk.

You can do a ton of variations with this basic recipe.  I’ve been working on a tropical one with mango as well!  What are your favorite smoothie bowl flavors?

Our Summer Lake Outfits

Between lakes in Utah and the lake where my parents live in Oregon, we are typically at the lake more than the beach during the year.  I recently found some cute pieces that make the perfect summer lake outfits, so I decided to share some of theme with you.  The swimsuit I’m wearing from Joules USA is currently one of my favorites this summer.  I love the print and coral colored detailing at the top of the suit, and the ruching and general shape of the suit flatters my body more than most of the swimwear I own.  This hat has also been on repeat this summer (if you haven’t already noticed from my other posts) :P.  I also love having a versatile hoodie for Everett, because the temperatures tend to fluctuate from really hot to very cool once the sun goes down; so I keep this hoodie with us whenever I think we might be out around the time it starts to cool off.

Hope you all had a great 4th of July, and try to stay cool in this heat!

Taking Baby to the Beach and What to Bring

On our recent trip to California we decided Everett was finally old enough to take to the beach. We were staying in the Marriott Newport Coast Villas, so we decided to drive to Corona Del Mar State Beach, which is just a couple of minutes away. I was a little afraid he was just going to sit there and eat the sand, but the outing turned out to be an absolute success! He loved dipping his toes in the water and playing in the sand (luckily, without eating it). We will definitely take him again next time we are visiting. There were a couple of things we brought with us that were really helpful, and a few things we wish we had thought of; so I decided to write a post about what to pack when you are taking baby to the beach.

PACKING LIST FOR A BABY BEACH DAY

#1 Sunscreen—This is definitely one of the most important things to pack so that your baby doesn’t get burned and you can enjoy those sweet #TinyMoments at the beach. We love Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50, because it is gentle on sensitive baby skin but definitely still does its job. It is perfect for pools, lakes and the beach because we found it to be very water resistant without being greasy. It is also hypoallergenic and free of parabens, phthalates, dyes, fragrances and chemical sunscreen ingredients. I also like to keep the Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Face Stick Sunscreen in my purse for quick application whenever he is in the sun, because the stick is extremely convenient and fits easily in my bag.

#2 Extra Towels/Beach Blankets—Whenever we took Everett back up to where we were sitting in the sand, he would quickly insist we bring him back to the water. It is nice to have extra towels for the continuous drying/cleaning of your baby, as well as to sit on.

#3 Beach Umbrella—We wished we had brought a beach umbrella so we could’ve stayed longer. It gets hot in the sun, and it is nice to keep the sand where you are sitting shaded and cool.

#4 Baby Hat and/or Baby Sunglasses—I think it’s a good idea to bring a hat and sunglasses so that it protects the top of baby’s head and keeps the sun out of their eyes. Everett wouldn’t keep either of these on though, so it just depends on whether or not your baby will wear them. In the past I have used baby hats that tie under the chin and baby sunglasses with straps; both of these were way more successful than the kind he can easily pull off.

#5 Something to Drink—Both for you and for the baby. It’s important that you stay hydrated if you will be at the beach for a while.

#6 Snacks in Sealed Containers—Snacks are always a good idea with babies. I recommend containers that will keep the sand out.

#7 Baby Swim Apparel—We brought baby swim trunks, swim diapers, little flip-flops (so the hot sand doesn’t burn baby’s feet) and a baby rash guard. I also recommend making sure your baby’s swimsuit isn’t too big. Everett’s trunks kept falling down when they got wet, because the weight of the water pulled them down. I wish I would’ve sized down a little since he is right in between sizes at the moment.

#8 Camera—Last, but not least…a camera! Whether it’s your smart phone or a fancy DSLR (or both), it’s essential to bring a camera to record all of the #TinyMoments.

I feel like I’m always a little clueless as a first time parent until I experience something for the first time, so I hope these packing tips for taking baby to the beach help you feel more prepared when you take your little one to the beach!

Denim on Denim Outfits

In the 90’s denim was a huge staple in most people’s closets.  Denim jackets, jeans, denim tops…I even remember seeing denim purses.  Sometimes it’s hard for me to embrace old trends made new that originated during my awkward fashion (okay, awkward in general) days.  However, I can’t help but love the look of a light chambray top paired with dark jeans.  Needless to say, here I am fully embracing the return of denim ensembles.

How about you?  Have you ever had any trends that took time to come around to when they came back in fashion?
